Want to spend a beautiful fall day in downtown Charleston, South Carolina?
Wake up from your stay at the MILLS HOUSE HOTEL and walk downstairs for coffee at the BLACK DOOR CAFE. This 171-year-old hotel is one of my favorites in Charleston because I love the gorgeous expansive lobby. It also has every type of space you would need, including this vibrant coffee shop right off the lobby.
Walk just two blocks up to Market street to explore the CHARLESTON CITY MARKET. I know you've probably been there before, but it feels like there is always something new to discover. And it feels like being on vacation.
This is a classic, but you can't go wrong with a bowl of soup on a fall day. Even if it's a balmy South Carolina-type fall day. Walk to 82 QUEEN for lunch and be sure and and sit in their outdoor courtyard. They have the best she crab soup in the city, so order a bowl and some of their southern pickins’ to start.
After lunch, head to the GIBBS MUSEUM OF ART and see their featured exhibition. They also have excellent workshops and lectures if you want to learn something new. You don't have to be an artist to appreciate the programs they offer.
Have dinner at FRANNIE AND THE FOX for an elegant setting in their courtyard or ‘greenhouse’. It's located in the Hotel Emeline in the heart of the city. They offer wood-fired pizzas, Italian classics, and use regional ingredients.
I almost hate to share this one because it really feels like a secret hideaway... but, cap off the evening by stopping in at the cozy BAR AND PATIO AT HUSK. It’s a warm and welcoming spot for a nightcap and right across the street from the hotel. You know I like a fancy cocktail but mostly I appreciate a great setting.
I love exploring my new city, and I like including classics as well as new discoveries. Let me know your favorites!
