Coastal Expedition with Fabulous Views
Coastal Expeditions explores Shem Creek, Kiawah River, and a few other places. We set out on the Cape Romain and Bulls Island tour, which left from Mount Pleasant. The protected landscapes of the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge are quiet and peaceful. It’s a great place to spot dolphins or a bald eagle. It’s full of flocks of birds, particularly the American Oystercatcher.
We chose the Cape Romain moonlight tour to watch the full moon rise over the water.
This Coastal Expeditions tour is not a rowdy party day, but a quiet evening and an opportunity to experience the refuge when the sky is glowing and the tides are shifting. We watched the sun set on one side of the boat, while the full moon rose on the other. I kept turning my head back and forth because each is so beautiful.
The trip is guided by two Coastal Expeditions naturalists who share their wealth of knowledge about the tides, the moon, and the nearby oyster beds, along with many interesting details about the marsh. Not only are they knowledgeable, but they are also friendly and open to questions.
Coastal Expeditions also offers stargazing tours over Little Caper’s Island, Kayaking tours, a family dolphin cruise, a Kiawah River Safari Cruise, and a new Kiawah River Backroads Safari.
In addition to their guided tours, Coastal Expeditions offer kayak and stand-up-paddleboard rentals at various locations around the Charleston area. Or, if you’d like to really explore the wildlife of the Lowcountry, check out their multi-day expeditions. They offer camping trips and retreat-style trips.
What I like best about this tour is that the Coastal Expeditions Foundation supports conservation efforts, such as protecting loggerhead sea turtles and investing in environmental education. Their mission is to ‘keep the Lowcountry wild through habitat preservation, public access to nature, and immersive education.'
