How to Spend A Day in Downtown Fernandina Beach

Want to know how to spend a day in Fernandina Beach in the fall?

Start your day with coffee, of course.

A day in Fernandina Beach should always start with coffee. Amelia Island Coffee has some creative latte choices. I always like mine in a mug, especially on a cool fall day. They have a nice selection of breakfast items, including pastries, avocado toast, and smoked salmon. They also serve a really good locally roasted coffee. The shop is cute and has a lovely setting in a historic building in downtown Fernandina Beach.

Boats and Trains

After breakfast, walk to the marina to enjoy water views and see the boats. It’s interesting to check out where they are from and their clever names. Who doesn’t enjoy some water views, a marina, and a lovely waterfront park?

The train tracks also run parallel to the river. If you are spending a day in Fernandina Beach with your kids, it’s the place to go to watch the trains come through. I kind of like them myself, actually.

Downtown Fernandina Shopping

Include a little shopping in your day in Fernandina Beach, whether you need a cute outfit at Pearl or Twisted Sisters!, or the man in your life needs something new from JJ Cooper. I enjoy buying teas and spices from The Spice & Tea Exchange. Try the ‘Florida Sunshine,’ which is fresh and lemony. It works well with fish and chicken.

Don't you love an old-fashioned bookstore?

The Book Loft Amelia Island

The Book Loft is one of the best for both national titles and local favorites. It’s right on Centre Street in the historic district of Fernandina Beach. It has served the community for over 35 years with events and author signings. You could spend the rest of the day in Fernandina Beach reading at the marina, but then you might miss something. So, just find something to take home. I rarely spend a day in Fernandina Beach when I don’t bring home a new book.

Outdoor Lunch Under a Pergola

Grab a table outside for lunch at Timotis. It’s a casual dining option with great seafood selections. I like the fried shrimp basket with fries, slaw, and hush puppies. A day in Fernandina Beach isn't complete without some Mayport Shrimp. The tuna poke bowl is another favorite, but any of their fresh local seafood is delicious.

Afternoon River Cruise

In my opinion, a day in Fernandina Beach must include a scenic boat ride. After lunch, grab a jacket and head down to the marina for an afternoon cruise with Amelia River Cruises and Charters. You’ll learn a little history, see some horses off Cumberland Island, and maybe a dolphin. Depending on the season, you might want to book this one ahead of time.

You Can't Spend a Day in Fernandina Beach Without Happy Hour

The Boat House Fernandina Beach

Want some live music? After your boat cruise, park yourself at the outdoor side of the bar at The Boat House for a cocktail and a lovely setting. They offer a happy hour most weekdays as well.

End Your Day With Dinner in a Festive Setting

Finish your day in Fernandina Beach with a Mexican dinner at Mezcal Spirit of Oaxaca on Centre Street. The restaurant features a spacious bar area and a pretty patio. In addition to classic margaritas, they offer a creative cocktail menu. The atmosphere is lively, and the food is both fresh and delicious.
