Bodega: NYC Nostalgia in Mount Pleasant
Bodega brings to Mount Pleasant that nostalgic old-fashioned New York ‘Bodega’ with a Charleston twist. They started as a pop-up weekend breakfast spot in Charleston and is now a go-to brunch restaurant with bold flavors, good coffee, and an upbeat atmosphere. The interior at Bodega has a classic New York-style bodega feel, with its concrete floors, neon signs, a tin ceiling, and murals in bright colors. It’s relaxed, casual, and fun.
Take a seat at a table or grab a stool at the counter bar, which has a couple of TVs, stickers, graffiti, and a wooden top.
Start with a traditional drip coffee in a classic diner mug (old school and my favorite). Or order something fancier, such as a ‘cereal milk cold brew’ or one of their lattes. They offer some creative choices such as a ‘PB& J Latte’ or a Strawberry Matcha, or a ‘Samoa That’, which is coconut cold brew with a salted caramel cold foam, and a chocolate drizzle. They also offer a variety of cold foam flavors.
Or have something a little stronger. Bodega makes a mean espresso martini, an Aperol spritz, or my personal favorite: a bloody Mary with an Old Bay rim, pickle juice, and bacon.
If you’re longing for old-school comfort food, you’ve got to try the Bodega Classic with a runny egg on a kaiser roll. I added breakfast sausage and avocado, and it was an excellent way to start the day.
Or try the ‘cinnie sticks’ with a maple pudding dipping sauce. They also offer a selection of bowls, avocado toast, salmon toast, and a whole list of chicken ‘sammies.’
If you don’t usually have a big breakfast, treat yourself to a hearty meal with a classic, nostalgic feel. If you don’t have time, Bodega also offers a grab-and-go and a drive-thru service, which is a nice option when you are headed to work.
