Make The Palace Saloon a Stop when in Fernandina Beach

A visit to Fernandina Beach wouldn’t be the same without a stop at The Palace Saloon on Centre Street. You may not agree with me because it’s not fancy, but I love The Palace Saloon and the history behind the oldest bar in Florida. Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Fernandina Beach was a bustling port, and ship captains used to frequent ‘The Palace’ when in Amelia Island. It was the last American tavern to close during Prohibition. According to the locals, they were still selling liquor until the final minutes before Prohibition took effect. It’s still popular with the locals and the tourists today.

You can’t miss the pirate outside.

When you step into the dark room, you’ll need a minute for your eyes to adjust. Once they do, go sit at the old wooden bar that probably hasn’t changed since the bar opened in 1903. You can also dance or listen to music most nights at The Palace Saloon. Check out the telephone booth in the corner and the vintage murals on the wall. I don't really understand them, but they are fascinating.

While you are there, be sure to try one of the pirate punches. I’m a beer drinker, so I’ve never had one, but I hear they are dangerous, so sip carefully.

One of the coolest features of this Fernandina Beach institution is the three other bar rooms that are hidden behind the main bar. Each has a distinctive personality. Next to the front bar is a sign leading to room two, which contains a few tables and an old-timey cigarette machine that appears to be fully stocked and working. Go through another door, which leads to a third room with a pool hall setting. Then, behind the pool room is an outdoor beer garden-type space with a raised concert space. It's a popular new section of The Palace Saloon.

And I thought there was only live music and a pirate.
