The Post House: A romantic spot for lunch or dinner
Did you know that you could have a romantic dinner in a historical building right in Mount Pleasant? The Post House Inn was built in 1896 and has seven rooms along with a 'coastal tavern' restaurant. They offer a charming respite from modern hustle and bustle, but do it in a contemporary way.
The decor of The Post House captures the authentic charm of the Old Village, with soft lighting, cozy upholstered booths, and lots of windows. The restaurant is comfortable and feels true to its historic roots, with beadboard, cafe curtains, tucked-away bookcases, painted trim, pine tables, and classic nautical-style artwork. It has a sense of character without feeling stuffy.
Start your evening at their gorgeous oak bar, which features antique mirrored shelving and traditionally framed artwork. The Post House offers classic cocktails, non-alcoholic cocktails, and an extensive wine list.
Or head out to the beautifully appointed patio. It's cozy and comfortable with fans and a fireplace, and my personal favorite. Choose the comfy sofa, one of the umbrella-covered pine tables. The street side French-style table for two along the sidewalk is also lovely, especially at dusk.
The Post House serves seasonal dishes inspired by the coast and rooted in Southern comfort. They are open for lunch, dinner, and a weekend brunch. We enjoyed a midweek lunch, and I've also been there for dinner; it is an elegant spot for a cozy family night, a gathering of friends, or a romantic date night.
Start with Anson Mills cornbread with benne seeds. It's warm, crumbly (in a good way), sweet, and served with whipped butter. You won't be disappointed.
The Post House offers a changing selection of salads, including my favorite: a shrimp Louie salad. It is served with grilled local Tarvin shrimp topped with remoulade on a bed of butter lettuce.
I also like their rotating soup options and any of their fresh fish specials. Try the swordfish sandwich with red pepper relish, zhoug, and arugula, which gives it an Asian spin and includes a grilled Napa cabbage side. The Post House's barback cheeseburger is always a good choice. I've heard good things about their crispy butterbean burger if you'd like a vegetarian option.
What makes the restaurant at The Post House special is the timeless way they combine the energy of a modern tavern, local flavors, and a historic setting. It feels warm and familiar, yet always fresh
