Want to know my hidden gem for authentic Cuban food in Amelia Island?
Check out 1928 Cuban Bistro in Fernandina for flavorful food inspired by a Cuban-American mom whose restaurant is a tribute to her grandparents. They serve authentic traditional Cuban food with a contemporary flair.
And this little restaurant in Fernandina Beach is adorable.
1928 Cuban Bistro is decorated in a fresh and tropical way, so it’s a lovely setting for lunch. It makes you feel like you are in a little cafe in the heart of Cuba with all the palm wallpaper and wicker furniture. As an artist, I love the hand-drawn art on the back wall.
If you want to try a few different items, start with the croquetas. I like the ham, but the chicken ones are good too. They are lightly fried and soft on the inside. I also like the ham and cheese empanadas, but the guava pastries are classic.
The Cuban sandwich is delicious, but try the medianoche, my favorite, which is a Cuban sandwich on sweet bread. They were out of the ropa vieja the last time I was there, but they have a new sandwich called the La Viejita, which sounds really good.
Whether you need it or not, finish your meal with a banana-Nutella-guava empanada. It’s worth the calories!
I’ve never been for breakfast, but I bet the Cuban coffee and pastries are delicious.
